Regnum Online
Disclaimer: I feel as if I need to start this off by saying Regnum Online is not open source. With that out of the way I can talk about how awesome this game is.
I absolutely loved World of Warcraft when I played it. What I didn’t love was the price. I used the “gamer cards” so it would cost me $30 every 2 months to play. That was just too steep on my limited budget and it still is. Since the day I stopped playing WoW I started looking for a free or at least cheaper alternative. My friends today I present to you that very alternative: Regnum Online
In my opinion this game is as close as NGD could get to the real thing without copyright infringement. You don’t have nearly as many races as WoW, but you have enough to get the job done. Instead of having the Horde and the Alliance you have Alsius, Ignis (which is what I consider to be a Horde equivalent), and Syrtis. The “good” is whichever Realm you belong to and the “bad” is everything else.
The classes are well balanced. You have a Warrior which can be a subclass of Knight or Barbarian, the Archer which can be a subclass of Marksman or Hunter, and the Mage which can be a Warlock (my personal favorite) or a Conjurer.
The quests are pretty well rounded as well. There are dozens of quests for every level, but like WoW not in every town. Some towns are not meant to be in unless you are a higher level. The War is certainly a cool part of the game. You can fight in the war at any level, but I’ve found 30 and up is the best. You can take over forts and tear down gates. It adds a really cool aspect to the game.
Let me add one major point about the game. It IS Free-to-Play, but there is also Premium Content that you can buy. Some of it is really neat and some of it is a rip off. The game can be played without this content though so no need to worry.
I could really go on for days about how amazing I think this game is, but I think you should try it out for yourself. If you have a decent video card cable of 3D acceleration (we here at the MLUG have found that laptops with Intel cards are almost always out of the question) and are running Linux or Windows you should go check it out.
Overall: 8/10
It’s not quite WoW, but it’s oh so close.
